about

Ephemeral is a ballet choreographed by Nora Gibson and premiered by her company Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet in February 2016. In Nora's words: "Ephemeral is a full-evening ballet that is inspired by life cycles, seasons, and our relationship to Time."

For the score I wanted to use mostly sonic elements found in nature. The main source of my score are the samples of birds wings flapping. I found so many hidden worlds of sound in the quick bursts of flapping sounds that last only a second in our time.

Throughout the piece I wanted to play with the concept of time, stretching the minute details of our world into a still expanse of timelessness. The opposite effect was achieved in the fourth section where I condensed dozens of sounds events into a hail storm of granular sounds that rain down as the piece culminates towards the end of the ballet into the "sound of everything at once".
